Polish B1 writing: tasks and sample answers

See how to turn a task into a complete text that suits its reader and situation.

Key information

For B1 writing, first identify your reader, purpose and the information your text must include. Plan your answer, use the requested format and check the word count in the task. Below are three original examples with explanations. In the adult exam, you complete both tasks from one chosen set.

What does adult B1 writing involve?

In the official paper linked below, writing takes 75 minutes. You choose one of three sets and complete both tasks a and b from that set. Do not combine task a from one set with task b from another. Always read the instructions in your paper.

These separate MyPolishExam exercises are not an official examination set. Their word ranges are practice targets. In the exam, use the word count specified in each task.

Before you write the first sentence

Read the whole task and underline the required information. Note a short idea in Polish for each point. This helps you spot a missing element before you finish the text. When choosing a set, consider both tasks, not just the shorter response.

Match the style to the reader. A friend can receive a direct, friendly message; an institution needs appropriate polite forms. Do not mix these ways of addressing the reader. Reserve some time for checking instead of adding new sentences until the final minute.

  • Reader: who will read the text, and what is your relationship?
  • Purpose: are you informing, inviting, requesting or describing an event?
  • Content: which points from the task must appear?
  • Format and length: what type of text is required, and how many words?

Example 1: a letter to a friend

Original letter: 130 words

Ćwiczenie autorskie: napisz list do koleżanki Ani o weekendowym wyjeździe. Opisz miejsce, jedną trudność i sposób jej rozwiązania. Zaproponuj wspólny wyjazd. Cel ćwiczenia: 120–140 słów, razem z powitaniem i podpisem.

Droga Aniu! Właśnie wróciłam z weekendu w Krakowie i chcę Ci opowiedzieć o tej wycieczce. Pojechałam tam z siostrą, ponieważ obie interesujemy się historią. Nasz mały hotel znajdował się blisko dworca, więc większość miejsc zwiedzałyśmy pieszo. Najbardziej podobał mi się spacer nad Wisłą. W sobotę rano chciałyśmy jednak odwiedzić muzeum, ale okazało się, że nie ma już biletów. Początkowo byłyśmy rozczarowane. Pracownica zaproponowała nam rezerwację na niedzielę, a wolne popołudnie spędziłyśmy na Kazimierzu. Dzięki temu odkryłyśmy przytulną kawiarnię i spróbowałyśmy pysznego ciasta. The answer covers every point: Kraków, the lack of tickets, a booking for the next day and a proposal for a shared trip. The friendly greeting and closing suit the relationship. Time expressions organise the story, while the final question gives the reader a specific reason to reply.

Example 2: an invitation

Original invitation: 48 words

Ćwiczenie autorskie: zaproś kolegę Piotra na spotkanie po przeprowadzce. Podaj okazję, miejsce, dzień i godzinę. Poproś o potwierdzenie przyjścia. Cel ćwiczenia: 45–55 słów, razem z powitaniem i podpisem.

Cześć Piotrze! Zapraszam Cię na spotkanie z okazji przeprowadzki do nowego mieszkania przy ulicy Lipowej dziesięć. Czekam w najbliższą sobotę o godzinie osiemnastej. Przygotuję kolację i kilka gier planszowych. Będą też nasi znajomi z kursu. Daj znać do czwartku, czy przyjdziesz i czy jesz mięso. Do zobaczenia! Ola

The text gives the occasion, address, day, time and confirmation deadline. Mentioning dinner explains the additional question about food. This is a complete answer to our practice task, but its length is not a universal examination requirement.

Example 3: a notice

Original notice: 47 words

Ćwiczenie autorskie: w bibliotece znaleziono plecak. Napisz ogłoszenie dla czytelników. Opisz przedmiot, podaj miejsce znalezienia i sposób odbioru. Cel ćwiczenia: 45–55 słów, razem z tytułem.

Znaleziono plecak W środę po południu w czytelni biblioteki miejskiej znaleziono granatowy plecak z małą żółtą kieszenią. Leżał pod stolikiem przy oknie. Właściciela prosimy o zgłoszenie się do recepcji biblioteki w godzinach otwarcia. Przy odbiorze należy opisać zawartość plecaka, aby potwierdzić, że przedmiot należy do właściwej osoby.

The heading immediately identifies the topic. The backpack description, location and collection instructions answer the task. A neutral style suits library readers. These details form a coherent situation; a telephone number is unnecessary because the notice directs people to reception.

Checklist before handing in your work

Check in two stages: meaning and completeness first, then language. In these examples, we count space-separated words, including the heading, greeting and signature where present. This is a transparent method for checking these exercises, not a statement of official rules for counting every kind of written item.

  • Have I completed both tasks from the same chosen set?
  • Does my text answer every point in the instruction?
  • Can the reader understand who is writing and what they want?
  • Do the format, style and length match the task?
  • Are my tenses, endings and forms of address consistent?
  • Have I checked spelling, punctuation and unclear handwriting?

How to practise with these examples

First hide the model and write your own response to the same task. Then compare how you cover the points, not whether your sentences match. You can use different events and words. Improve one paragraph and try again a few days later without copying.

Frequently asked questions

How many texts do I write in the B1 exam?

In the linked adult paper, you choose one set and write both texts a and b from it. Having three sets to choose from does not mean you must write three texts.

Must every invitation have the same word count?

Do not treat the length of our examples as a general rule. Check the word count in your task. Here we deliberately give our own practice ranges and the word counts of the answers.

Should I memorise a whole example?

Learn useful expressions and text organisation, but respond to the task you receive. A memorised letter about a trip will not answer a task involving a different situation or reader.

Is error-free grammar enough?

Accuracy matters, but you must also complete the task using suitable format, content and length. A grammatically correct text that omits required information is incomplete. No model answer guarantees a pass.
